Cast Iron ornament in the form of a sperm whale stamped inside the back in Large raised letters “D. Baker New Bedford”. The base of the whale has two tabs made for fastening the whale down to a flat surface. D. Baker refers to David Baker of New Bedford who was born in 1795 and worked between circa 1836 and 1859. He was a “Mathematical Instrument Maker” and purveyor of navigational Instruments at 44 North Water Street, New Bedford MA. Examples of the same casting are in the collection of The Smithsonian Institute, Mystic Seaport and new Bedford Whaling Museum. The whales are very rare and are sought after by collectors. (FA1120)
