Information

Chelsea special 8 1/2 inch dial "Commander", No.15230, 1905.  The clock has an 8 1/2 inch special silver dial with the retailer's name, "Spaulding & Co. Chicago" engraved near the center.  The clock has applied bronze Arabic numerals and retains the oversized fancy hands. These hands were only used during the first six years of the Chelsea clock production.  The clock retains its original red brass case which sits on a red brass base which is mounted on the original wood base with wood back.  The clock retains its original Chelsea eight day time and strike movement.  This clock is one of a few known to have the decorative engraving of a helmsman wearing a sou'wester hat and foul weather gear. The helmsman is clutching in each hand one of the wheel spokes.  The detailing and shadowing in the engraving is excellent.  These clocks have become referred to as the "helmsman" model.  The few known examples were all sold to Spaulding & Co. who were probably responsible for this special commission.
