Expectantly fine scrimshaw rolling pin circa mid-19th made from various exotic woods and is elaborately inlaid with bulbous turned whale ivory ends with tortoise shell disc inlay at ends. The rolling pins is constructed of five sections of laminated wood that are narrower at the ends and thickest at the center section. The outer section look like they may be walnut and the middle 3 sections appear to be a lighter mahogany in color. Each of the five sections are elaborately inlaid light and dark wood with elongated diamonds, half circles and lolli pop designs. Both the workmanship and inlaid design motifs are outstanding. This is the most elaborate and antically rendered rolling pin we have examined.
Condition: The whale ivory ends have a deep mellow patina with typical age cracks. All of the wood sections of the rolling pin are in excellent untouched condition. (SC1214)
