Fine elaborate four tier whale ivory. tortoise shell and baleen thread holder, American Mid-19th Century. The four of the tiers are round except the bottom one which is eight sided. The diameter becomes larger each step down. The top two have tortoise shell discs supported by tortoise and whale ivory bases. The third one down has a sun burst carved baleen base and the bottom level has tortoise panels with molded ivory corners. The top of the stand has a turned whale ivory cup finals. There are four removable ivory spool holders with turned decorative tops. The top two tiers have four turned whale ivory finial like decorative posts and the bottom tier has eight. The height of the posts gets larger each tier down. The Thread dispenser has a whale bone eight-sided base with a bone dowl that goes up through the center of all the tiers and threads into the top finial and is locked at the bottom with a bone pin. The stand is supported on four turned ivory feet. (SC1262)
Condition: A few of the finials have some typical warpage and the thread stand is in excellent condition.
