Whale Ivory and exotic wood scrimshaw rolling pin, American circa mid-19th Century.  The opposite end of the rolling pin are made from whale ivory the are 2 3/8 inches in length. The ends of these sections are bulbous in form with inlaid tortoise shell inlays at the back ends. The inside of the ivory ends have perfectly rounded ivory rings that float and turn freely around a narrow part of the handle end. These rings are sometimes referred to as mystery rings because it is difficult to understand how they were placed there. We have never seen mystery rings created for a rolling pin before. There are four of each type of section going around the circumference of the rolling pin. (SC1215)
