Information

Extremely fine set of four watercolor paintings by Youqua, the one titled Canton is dated 1863. One of the paintings has a label with the name Youqua which is included in the photos. The harbor name of each of the watercolors is titled at the center of the bottom margin in black ink. The detail and color of each picture is outstanding. The four harbors identified are Canton, Shanghai, Macao and Amoy. Each painting has a thick black line around the perimeter of the painting and there is a very small space and a second much thinner line creates a second and outer border. The sheet size for each painting is approximately 9 ½ inches tall by 12 ¼ inches wide. The dimensions vary about ½ height and width between the four paintings. Each painting is tacked at a few points on all four sides to a light blue silk ribbon which in turn is tacked at a few points to a backing sheet which measures about 10 x 14 ½ with a small variation between each painting. The paintings have been mounted in such away that they could easily and with out damage be removed from the mounts. (PA-994)

The harbor appears very straight with a row of two story buildings of various styles of architecture. Just to the right of center is an American flag flying from a tall flagpole. The harbor is full of Chinese vessels of a wide variety of types. The water is very calm and has fine horizontal and colorful bands of color. There is also a very dramatic light and dark shading in the water. The detail in the painting is outstanding as is the condition. (PA-995)

To the left also in black ink the title ”Above the Ocean”.  The harbor appears very straight with a row of two story buildings of various styles of architecture.  The harbor is full of Chinese vessels of a wide variety of types. There are two western ships one with a British flag and and the other flying the French flag. Further to the left is an English two masted schooner. There are several finely detailed tiny figures depicted on the various vessels. The water is very calm and has fine horizontal and colorful bands. There is also a very dramatic light and dark shading in the water. The detail in the painting is outstanding as is the condition. (PA-996)

Watercolor painting titled in black ink "Macao" at the center of the bottom border. To the left also written in black ink the word “G. Mum”.  The title “The Iate”?” is written in pencil on the right. The harbor appears to have a gentle curve with a few rows of two story buildings of various styles of architecture.  In the distance there are two tall hills each with a building on top. To the bottom left, the shore takes a big bend and going up a hill there are a large number of residential homes shown. The harbor has several Chinese vessels of a wide variety of types. There is a small western sloop to the far left of the picture near the center of the painting. There are several finely detailed tiny figures depicted on the various vessels. There are also many figures painted along the shore. The water is very calm and has fine horizontal and colorful bands. There is also a very dramatic light and dark shading in the water. The detail in the painting is outstanding as is the condition. (PA-997)

The paintings have contemporary mahogany frames with glass mats painted in reverse with black backgrounds and gold leaf borders.
Condition: The condition of all of the paintings is outstanding. There is no fading, staining or other problems. The color density is as strong as the day they were painted.
