Exceptional oak library steps, English, circa 1870.  The ladder has seven risers below a standing deck with side rails supporting a front bookshelf. A handrail extends down from the side rails and is supported near the bottom of the rail by an up right support projecting from the second step. All of the steps are mortised into the sides for maximum strength.  The legs supporting the ladder are beautifully chamfered and are connected to the front legs with a pair of stretchers and the front legs are supported by a pair of cross stretchers above a horizontal stretcher.  The bottom of the four legs insert into beautifully cast brass foot supports above the original casters.  The steps can be rolled easily around a library to access books that are hard to reach. Condition:  There is a repair to the cross stretchers at the front of the steps.  There is some normal shrinkage.
