Fine rare seven-inch Nantucket basket with flared top. The basket has a delicately shaped swing oak handle with oak wood ears. The basket is finely woven with oak ribs and a mahogany base.
Condition” The basket is in excellent condition and has a deep mellow age patina.
Note: A very similar flared top basket is illustrated as item “9” In the book “The Lightship Baskets of Nantucket A Continuing Craft by David Wood, Curator of the Nantucket Historical Association. The basket shown was credited to the Madden Collection and has a diameter of 9 inches and a height of 6 ½ inches. The text indicates that this style of basket is early and a form rarely seen.
