Rare whalebone carpenters block plane, American second half 19th Century. The plane is made from a heavy solid block of whalebone. The front and rear are flat and the sides have a gentle curve from the center to both the front and the back. Forward of the middle is a slanted notch cut out of the base of the plane. There is a removable shaped whalebone wedge with a cut out arms at the bottom that slides into the block at an angel and wedges the original steel blade into the tool making it ready for use. Condition: The block plane shows a bit of use but it is in very good condition with a deep age patina. The metal blade show old rust.
