Burkert, Gh.

Oil on canvas, multimedia picture, signed lower right: "Gh. Burkert", depicting the two masted steam yacht, "Sylvia". The vessel has a velvet hull, lifeboats and stack. The spars, rigging, US flag and figures are embroidered. This multimedia vessel, like T. Willis paintings, is created on an oil on canvas background. The sea and sky are well painted and there are a few other vessels painted off in the distance. The artist has painted an effective white water wake around the hull. The painting retains its original Victorian frame which has a gold liner and a multi- molded natural wood frame. (PA-500)
Condition of painting: There is an old patch on the back of the canvas approximately one inch square in the sky slightly above the flag. Condition of frame: The outer molding has a carved chain pattern and there is a small loss in the upper left corner. The frame retains its original wavy glass.
Note: The steam yacht, "Sylvia", was built in 1882 in Glasgow by A. Stephen & Sons and belonged to Edward M. Brown. Mr. Brown was a member of the New York, Atlantic and Larchmont Yacht Clubs. Sylvia was 146 feet in length, 18.5 in breadth and 10 feet in draft. Dimensions of Painting: Height 17 3/4 inches; Width 31 3/4 inches.
