Rare whalebone Hand Jigging Line used for Fishing, American 19th Century. The frame has an “H” cross frame that is mortised joined and brass pinned to lock pieces together. All of the inside edges are chamfered. The ends protrude about an inch from the frame and this acts as a keeper for the line.
There are several feet of old line wrapped around the frame. This is a fine example of a utilitarian piece of scrimshaw and a very basic fishing device used instead of a rod. (SC1240)
Condition: The jigging line is in excellent condition has a deep mellow patina.
