Buttersworth, James E. (American 1817-1894) Oil on panel, depicting sailing yachts at sunset, signed lower right: "J E Buttersworth", circa 1875. In the foreground, there is a schooner yacht sailing to the left flying an American flag. To the right, there are a group of yachts sailing towards the viewer "wing on wing". To the far left is a square rig naval vessel flying an American flag. Near the center of the painting at the horizon is a tall lighthouse. To the left, the sun is setting casting rays into the bank of clouds above and creating a burst of color across the horizon. The water is rather calm and there are wonderful reflections of the sails cast into the water from the sunset. This is one of the few paintings by J E Buttersworth, we have examined, which depicts the sun itself dropping at the horizon.
