Semple, J. American: Active Belfast and Derry, Maine 1861 - 1875 Oil on canvas, portrait of the topsail schooner "J.C.R.", signed and dated in red lower right: "J. Semple 1869". The name of the vessel appears on a quarter board on the bow and again on a banner flying off the aft mast. The painting is beautifully detailed and has nice bright colors. There are puffy billowing clouds and the water has translucent highlights in the waves. There is a shoreline in the distance where a few small vessels appear. (PA-650) Condition: The painting was cleaned and lined in the early 1990s. It is generally in excellent condition. There are two small areas of in-paint in the sails and some minor scattered in-paint in the sky. The painting retains its original stretcher. Note: The J.C.R. was built in Liverpool in 1865 and was owned by J. Remey.
