Gifford, Charles Henry (American 1839-1904) Oil on canvas, depicting sailing vessels in a calm sea, signed lower right: "C.H. Gifford", circa 1880. Near the center of the painting is a two-masted schooner in light wind. In the distance at the horizon to the left and right of the schooner are gaff rigged sloops. In the left foreground is a bright red buoy adding alot of color and perspective to the canvas. To the left of center and a little ways down from the top of the canvas is a late afternoon sun beginning to set. A cloud bank runs across the canvas above the horizon. The sun is creating a wonderful color pattern in the clouds and is more brightly illuminated where the sun is peekng through. Below the cloud bank and leading to the horizon is a band of beautifully lit sky with pink and purple hues. The water is very still and has wonderful reflections coming from the vessels and the buoy. The setting sun is also creating wonderful highlights in the water near the horizon and then drawing towards the viewer. The painting has a wonderful calm and luminous quality.
