Hathaway, George M. (American 1852-1903) Oil on board, signed lower right in the rocks: "G.M. Hathaway," American, circa 1880. On the reverse is the academy board label of Gould & Whipple, Portland, Maine. The painting depicts a white-hulled two masted schooner just off shore. The vessel is under full sail and the detail is very accurate. There is a second vessel to the left at the horizon. In the foreground on the left and right is some large rocks typical of the coast of Maine. The bottom corners have a vignette like effect. The medium green, white froth waves are breaking on the rocks. The water beyond the waves is brighter and much calmer. The sky is a clear robin's-egg blue and there is a cloud bank along the horizon. (PA-678) Note: Despite its modest size this is an unusually large size compared to most of Hathaway's works. The composition is typical of his style. Condition of painting: Please refer to document folder for a full condition report from Yost Restoration. Condition of frame: The frame is a nineteenth-century style replica deep cove frame with gesso detail with a 23 karat gold leaf surface.
