Gifford, Charles Henry (American 1839-1904) Oil on canvas, depicting vessels at sunset off Grand Manan, signed and dated lower left: "C H Gifford 1876." In the foreground are two fishermen in a rowboat, one pulling in a trap. To the left of center is a two masted schooner towing a dory becalmed. To the left of the schooner and in the distance are a few sailing vessels. On the right half of the painting along the horizon raises the sheer cliffs of Grand Manan with low green vegetation along the top. Near the base of the cliff are three two masted schooners. The sense of calmness and the magnificent reflections are wonderfully rendered. The range of colors which subtly change both in the sky and water are comparable to the great luminous works of Fitz Henry Lane and William Bradford. This is the finest example, we have examined, of a painting by C. H. Gifford. (PA-688) Condition of painting: The painting has been recently cleaned and is unlined and retains its original stretcher. The painted surface is amazingly fresh and untouched. Condition of frame: The painting has a period gold leaf fluted cove frame with liner that may be original to the painting. The frame has a few scattered losses and mellow age patina.

Dimensions of painting: 12 x 20.

Dimensions of frame: 19 x 27.
