Cahoon, Ralph American 1910-1982 Oil on masonite, signed lower right: "R. Cahoon,", circa 1965. The painting has acquired the titled: "Boston and the Tropics." The painting consistes of two vertical arched panels. Each panel has a small gold pinstriped border and is set into a black background. The left panel features the front of the Old State House in Boston. The red brick and other architectural details are accurately rendered and include the carved and gilded lion and unicorn that sit at the outer edges of the gable above the round windows. There are figures standing looking through telescopes on the tower of the Old State House as well as on the adjecent roof tops. The panel on the right depicts a scene in the Tropics showing three sailors wearing hats drinking rum with a mermaid who is seated on a barrel. Two of the sailors' hatbands have "BOSTON" written across the front. To the right there is a sailor seated below a palm tree being embraced by a mermaid. The center band of the right side panel has a blue painted ocean with whimsical waves and the left center of this panel is a brig flying an American flag while to the right are two whale ships on opposite sides of a tiny island with two whales near by. Along the horizon are a few small islands with palm trees. The sky is blue with puffy clouds and matches the panel to the left. It is believed that this painting was commissioned by a Bostonian that split their time between Boston and a southern location. The painting has all the elements that characterize an excellent example of Ralph Cahoon's work. (PA-699) Condition of painting: Excellent.
