InformationRare Cased Hand Tinted Sixth Plate Tin Type Depicting a "Washington" Fire Pumper Model (1856-1860). The image depicts this very early fire horse drawn fire pumper with four wheels. The bed of the pumper is curved and has over twenty fire buckets hanging from the bottom of the pumper frame. At the center of the pumper is a raised platform, with a bust of George Washington with an American flag at all for corners. The word "Washington" is stenciled on the side of the tank. There are six bells on arches and 48 fire buckets. Few fire pumpers of this age exist. "Washington" served as a volunteer fire fighter inn his youth and some companies named their fire pumpers after him including one in 1852."MELANIOTYPE FOR NEFF's Patent Feb. 19, 1856 is impressed on the plate. (It is faintly visible on the edge of the "naked" plate to see one has to remove the image from the mat and glass. Hand tinted and gilded with full leather case.
