Whaler-made Whale Ivory Capstan Knob Grip Walking Stick, mid-19th century. The cane has a whale ivory eight-sided carved octagonal grip with a round dome shaped silver piece with engraved initials. At the bottom of the grip is a silver band above a long heavily carved tapered whale bone shaft. The top of the shaft has a four-column cage with a rope twist caved whale bone insert. The next section is fluted with small ebony disc inlays. The next two sections are rope carved in reversing directions separated by narrow smooth bands. The bottom of the rope has another smooth band followed by a smooth tapered section. (WS0264)
