Information

Exceptionally Fine and rare Ship's Clock, signed Harvard Clock Co., Boston on movement, circa 1895. The clock retains its original 12 inch silver dial.  The dial has beautifully engraved Roman numerals which are wax filled.  Below the center mount winding arbor is the retailers label signed: "CROSBY STEAM GAUGE & VALVE CO. BOSTON".  Above the winding post is an almost circular aperture or cut away in the dial, exposing the engine turned movement plates.  One can also see the beautifully hand-engraved balance wheel mount with slow/fast adjustment.  The clock retains its original hands. The clock retains its original bronze case with a deep dish hinge bezel with a beautifully applied shield style hinge.  The eight day movement is in good running order. (Cl-0006)
Note:  The Harvard Clock Company was a predecessor to the Chelsea clock company.  The clocks are quite rare, particularly clocks with the exposed escapements.  This is the only example known with an exposed escapement and a 12 inch dial.  The other known examples have smaller dials, usually 5 1/2 inches.  This clock is among the most desirable and rare of American ship clocks.
Condition:  The dial retains its original silver and has scattered discoloration.  The case has been polished and lacquered in 1980.
Dimension: Diameter 14 1/4 inches; Depth 3 1/4 inches.
