Shadow Box of an American Harbor with Several Vessels and American Flags, circa 1880
InformationOutstanding Shadow Box depicting an American harbor. To the right is a high spit of land with painted building at the top of the hill with a church steeple in the background. The land drops down to a beach with a building to the right with a figure outdoors and a small red sloop in the plaster sea. To the far right is a cliff with a spit of land with a tall white lighthouse flying an American flag at the top. To the far right is a dock with a standing figure and a tugboat named “Wave” is pulled up near the dock. To the far right is a gaff rigged sloop with two standing figures and an American flag pulling a dory. The front part of the sea is a wavy like plaster sea and in the distance the sea is painted. In the distance is a painted steamer. The sky is beautifully painted and has a luminous look with a beginning sunset. Although informal, rustic with an unpretentious charm, this shadow box has a lot of detail, several figures and great color. The shadow box retains is fancy pattern original frame with a gold painted surface. (SM0736)
