InformationDaguerreotype of An American sailor attributed to Phineas Pardee of new haven CT (1817-1889). The subject is wearing his sailor uniform circa 1850. The sailor is a young gentleman wearing a white shirt with a darker wide color. He is wearing a long necktie or kerchief and a broad brimmed hat. He is seated with his right arm resting on a chair arm. He is wearing a gold tinted ring on his right hand. The is a painted back drop depicting a lake or river. (PH0482)
Condition: There is a small brown spot near the bottom of the image and a small abrasion near the upper left of the image. The image retains its original oval simple mat and embossed leather case with a red velvet patterned liner on the inside of the lid.
Note there is a note on the inside of the case which states "John S. Lovejoy, Died at Sea 1853". Accompainig the dag is an old family bible that tells the story of his deaht by drowning trying to save others struggling in the ocean.
