It has a beautifully twisted shaft that terminates with a natural and perfect tip. The silver bulbous grip is large and the repoussé fancy work on the silver grip is both detailed and attractive. Provenance: The Estate of Eddi Van Auken. Literature: Illustrated in: "Vertical Art, The Enduring Beauty of Antique Canes and Walking Sticks", Photo double page spread on pages 170-71 is described as No. 203 and the caption reads “German circa 1867", hallmarked, silver and narwhal shaft. On a tapering narwhal shaft, an opulent repousse handle with a fluted twist design, chased scrolls and flowers, and an engraved top cartouche: “To Franz Xavier Winter-halter from Clarissa June 27th 1867” "Franz Xavier Winter-halter was a prominent and highly successful German portrait painter during the mid-19th century, His clients, mostly aristocrats and royals, included Queen Victoria (for whom he is said to have done at least 120 works , Empress Eugenie, Queen Isabella and Czarina Maria Alexandovna. Europe’s fashionable elite considered him among the most sought after artists of the period.” The Eddi Van Auken's cane collection is considered amongst the largest and finest ever assembled. Many of the canes in the collection are described and illustrated in two books showing the collection. Condition: Excellent.
