InformationSixth plate Daguerreotype of a Seated Navy Sailor with Related china Trade Box, circa 1855. The image depicts a handsome your man his naval uniform, with stars on his hat, a two toned broad colored shirt , large tie and dark pants. His right arm is resting on a table with a patterned cloth top. While the sailor was in Japan his squadron also visited China where he purchased a china trade box filled with bone implements. There is also a note that was in the box that states "PRESENTED TO CHARLOTTE CAMPBELL (WIFE OF MY UNCLE ALEXANDER CAMPBELL), BY HER NEPHEW WHO WAS IN THE U.S. NAVY MEMBER OF THE CREW OF THE SQUADRON UNDER COMMODORE MATHEW P. PERRY WHICH FORCED THE FIRST COMMERCIAL TREATY ON JAPAN IN 1854. THE FIRST TO OPEN JAPANESE PORTS TO THE COMMERCE OF THE WESTERN WORLD CHARLES W CAMPBELL." "DAGUEROTYPE IS THAT OF SAILOR ABOVE MENTIONED". The daguerreotype has its original leather case with embossed sailboats on each side and its original plain mat. (PH0479)
