Brass 10GA Signal Canon on Mahogany Yacht Carriage by Strong Fire Arms Co, CT Circa 1890
InformationRare Brass signal cannon with a 10 inch Strong FA CO-inch barrel, signed on top of the breech: "Strong FA Co., New Haven CT", circa 1890. The barrel has an unusual shape for a strong cannon. Rather then a round tapered barrel this cannon has a tapered round barrel from the muzzle to the front of the trunnnion cap and then it broadens about a 1/4 of an inch and continues to widen a it moves to the breach. This cannon has rarely a seen exterior hammer that is designed to strike a pin at the back of the cannon. To open the breach one must pull out a steel, "L" shaped bar from the side of the cannon which releases the breach. One can then pull the breach mechanism out which then can be rotated out of the way to insert or remove a shell. I believe the cannon uses 12-gauge shells rather than the larger more common 10 Gauge shell. The cannon is mounted on its original mahogany yacht carriage which features a pair of lignum vitae wheels mounted to the front of the carriage. The carriage retains its original trunnion caps, side and rear tie downs, through bolts and elevator mechanism. (I-1021)
Condition: The cannon is in excellent condition. The brass and wood have natural patina with a mellow original look.
